What is Cordova Iceworms?
Cordova Iceworms is more than just a youth swim program — it’s a community where kids grow both in and out of the water. We believe swimming builds more than strong athletes. It develops confidence, discipline, teamwork, and lifelong skills that reach far beyond the pool.
Our mission is simple: to give every swimmer the opportunity to learn, improve, and succeed in a supportive and fun environment. From the first splash to the finish line, Iceworms provides youth in Cordova with the tools to thrive, guided by dedicated coaches, parents, and volunteers.
Building Strong Swimmers, Stronger Kids.
Frequently Asked Questions
We split the year into 3 different swim seasons to support the Cordova School District and Cordova Iceworms. The Junior and Senior High School programs both start in early August. JrHS runs through October and the SrHS dips into early November with ASAA's Alaska State Championship Tournament. The Cordova Iceworms season begins November 1 and runs to the end of April and culminates with AK Swimming's Alaska State Championship swim meet.
Swim meets are one of the most exciting parts of being an Iceworm! The exact dates change from year to year and are specific to each program, so we always post the current season’s schedule on your swimmer’s program page right here on the website. Most meets take place out of town, which makes them fun adventures for our team. But don’t worry—we also hold local time trials and postal meets in Cordova so every swimmer gets a chance to race, track their progress, and celebrate their hard work.
Depending on the season and group, there are up to four practices per week. Jr/Sr High School: M, W, F 6:30am - 7:45am, and Sat 7:30am - 9:00am. Iceworms 4th grade and up: M, W, F 6:30am - 7:45am, and Sat 7:30am - 9:00am. Iceworms age 6 and 3rd grade: Tu & Th 6:30am - 7:45am, and Sat 7:30am - 9:00am.
Swimmers must be at least 6 years old and feel comfortable being in deep water. To make sure everyone is safe and ready for practice, new swimmers will complete a quick skills check with our coaches. The skills check includes: 1) Swimming 25 yards on their own for swimmers ages 6–8, or 50 yards for swimmers ages 9 and up, 2) Treading water for 1 minute in the deep end, and 3) Doing a few deep-water bobs (going under and back up). Don’t worry—our coaches make this a positive experience, and it’s just to be sure each swimmer is ready for the fun of team practices.
Registration fees vary depending on the swimmer’s age group and program. Jr/Sr High School Swimmers The Cordova Iceworms proudly support the Cordova School District’s Jr/Sr High School Swim Team. These swimmers register through our website, but their fees and any needed travel expenses are fully covered by the Iceworms nonprofit. Cordova Iceworms Program Registration ranges from $200–$300 per child depending on age group. We do our best to cover meet entry fees and ferry costs for swimmers whenever possible. If funding is limited, families may be asked to cover meet expenses. Hotels and parent/guardian travel costs are always the responsibility of the family.
Yes. The Cordova Iceworms Swim Team is a non-profit organization, and fundraising helps keep our program strong and affordable for all families. Funds raised go directly toward coaches, equipment, pool use, and swimmer travel support. Our biggest fundraiser each year is the Super Swim, and every swimmer is expected to participate. In addition, each family is asked to help with one other fundraiser during the year. Past fundraisers have included things like candle sales, cotton candy at the Holiday Bazaar, bake sales, pizza sales, and farm fresh fruit & veggie sales. Fundraising is a fun way for swimmers and families to be involved, build team spirit, and keep the program sustainable.
Yes! The Cordova Iceworms believe that no child should miss out on swimming because of financial need. If registration costs are a challenge, scholarships are available—all you need to do is ask. We keep the process simple and confidential. Just reach out to a board member or coach, and we’ll work with you to make sure your swimmer can join the team. Scholarships can cover part or all of registration fees, and in some cases, may also help with travel expenses. Our goal is to support every child who wants to swim, regardless of financial circumstances. If you’re unsure, please ask—we’re here to help.
